How Much Habitat is Enough? Second Edition

To assist efforts to reverse habitat loss and fragmentation in the Great Lakes basin, A Framework for Guiding Habitat Rehabilitation in Great Lakes Areas of Concern was prepared by Environment Canada and the Ontario Ministries of Natural Resources and Environment in 1998. The second edition incorporates a review of the relevant new literature that has appeared since the first edition to ensure that the Framework is based on the most current science.

The Framework provides 18 wetland, riparian and forest habitat guidelines and accompanying rationales. Within Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs), the Framework can be used to assist in the setting and achievement of delisting criteria concerning fish and wildlife habitat beneficial-use impairments, and post delisting can provide further guidance on habitat restoration.
