Description

The first step in establishing habitat-based priorities in bird conservation is to identify important bird habitat. The designation of a network of sites can help decision-makers focus their efforts and protect the most critical bird habitat. The goals of the Important Bird Area (IBA) program are to:

  • Identify a network of sites to conserve the natural diversity of Canadian bird species
  • Determine the type of protection or stewardship required for each site
  • Engage local residents to develop, implement and monitor the effectiveness of conservation plans
Many of the sites are, or include, wetlands. A map of all the potential IBA sites is provided on their webpage.
