Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre

Oak Hammock Marsh is one of North America's birding hotspots - a 36 square km Wildlife Management Area located just north of Winnipeg. It features a restored prairie marsh, aspen-oak bluff, waterfowl lure crops, artesian springs, 30 kilometres of trails, and some of Manitoba's last areas of tall-grass prairie - an endangered habitat.

Nestled at the western edge of the restored wetland is a Conservation Centre housing the national headquarters of Ducks Unlimited Canada, plus an Interpretive Centre that is jointly managed by Ducks Unlimited Canada and the Province of Manitoba. The Interpretive Centre:

  • features a 120-seat multimedia theatre, rooftop observation deck, and interactive exhibits related to wetlands and their wildlife
  • offers Project WET, an interdisciplinary water education program targeting grades K-12.
  • Project WET workshops for teachers
  • assists with Manitoba Envirothon and the Youth Stewardship in Environmental Sciences Project
  • provides over 30 different curriculum-based field trip programs that can be delivered in English or French (pre-school to university level)
Other activities at the marsh include a number of eco-adventure programs including birding, canoeing and a marsh walk-about. See the web site for a full schedule of public and educational programs.
