Description

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA) sets out the responsibilities and procedures for environmental assessment of projects involving the federal government. The Act applies to projects where federal government holds decision-making authority ? whether it proposes a project, sells, leases or transfers control of land, contributes money or other financial assistance, or exercises a regulatory or ?permitting? duty. CEAA regulations specifically refer to wetlands and activities that could impact on ?water bodies?, the definition of which includes wetlands. The Act ensures that the environmental effects of projects are considered early in the project planning stages, and that the public has an opportunity to participate in the process.
