This report reviews the potential, range and legislative status (as of 1995) of conservation covenants, easements and servitudes that can be used to promote wetland conservation in Canada. It describes:

  • the meaning, benefits and barriers associated with these conservation tools
  • enabling provincial and territorial legislation
  • issues specific to the legislation and those pertaining to tax, assessment, planning and other laws
  • conservation easement legislation in the United States
  • considerations when preparing conservation covenant and easement legislation, complete with examples and references
