Recommendations for a New Alberta Wetland Policy

This document contains the Alberta Water Council's recommended Alberta Wetland Policy. The policy document is accompanied by the recommended Wetland Policy Implementation Plan. It is the intention of the Council that the recommendations be applied consistently to future watershed and land use planning in the province.

The Recommendations contain five strategic directives:

  • Manage impacts to wetlands
  • Be proactive by setting wetland objectives and by integrating policy and planning
  • Encourage voluntary stewardship
  • Build knowledge and capacity
  • Protect wetlands of exceptional value

The Wetland Mitigation Decision Framework is provided to guide regulators and proponents where development is proposed that affects a wetland.
