Assessing Wetland Functions Using Hydrogeomorphic Classification

The hydrogeomorphic (HGM) approach to functional assessment is used extensively in the United States. It:

  • measures the net change in wetland functions on a local scale for single projects
  • compares this data against reference wetlands
  • makes rapid assessments of the relative performance of hydrological, biogeochemical and habitat properties and processes
  • provides the data needed to make informed local management decisions
  • provides the data needed to measure progress toward national wetland goals
The HGM approach would be very difficult to apply directly in Canada because it requires regional implementation guidelines. HGM is included in WetKit to raise awareness about alternative approaches to functional assessment.
