This Act authorizes the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans to manage Canada?s estuarine, coastal and marine ecosystems. It allows for the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPA) that can be designated to conserve, among others:

  • fisheries
  • endangered species and their habitats
  • unique habitats as well as marine areas of high biodiversity or biological productivity
The Act also requires that an integrated management plan be developed for the MPAs and that a national strategy be developed for managing Canada?s estuarine coastal and marine ecosystems.
